East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight is backing a campaign to stop tigers and leopards being cruelly killed to service increasing demand in China for so-called “traditional” medicines and decorative trinkets.
Sir Greg says: “Fewer than 4,000 tigers survive in the wild, having been hunted to the brink of extinction. Snow leopards, lions and jaguars are being killed for the trade in their body parts. More pressure is being placed on these animals following China introducing a ban in the trade of ivory recently.”
Sir Greg and a number of MPs have signed a pledge calling for a total ban on the trading of big cat products, for stockpiles of big cat products to be destroyed and their captive breeding for body parts to be outlawed.
Sir Greg said: “These magnificent creatures belong in the wild and there is simply no justification for the on-going unnecessary slaughter”.
