East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight has warned of the risks associated with sky lanterns and urged people to not to release them, not only during New Year celebrations but also on any other occasion.

Sir Greg says: “Sky lanterns can harm or even kill animals, as well as putting crops at significant risk of being set alight and destroyed.

He adds: “These lanterns must land somewhere and whilst they may look pretty in the sky, they quickly become potentially dangerous litter across our countryside. There are many ways to enjoy seeing in the New Year that don’t create unwanted litter or pose a fire risk – so this year I urge everyone to give sky lanterns a miss.”

The National Farmers Union is also opposed to their use. NFU President Ms Minette Batters said: “We would urge everyone to think twice before setting lanterns alight and releasing them into the environment.”
