East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight is one of more than 80 MPs and Peers from across political parties calling for an additional £100bn investment in north of England transport.

The politicians have written to the Chancellor asking for regional road and rail links to be improved in time for the proposed arrival of HS2 in 2032. They have argued that the money is needed to “reverse decades of underinvestment”.

New investment could include a high-speed rail link between Leeds and Hull and Sheffield and Hull and better trunk roads in the region to remove bottlenecks.

Sir Greg said: “It is critical that action is taken before the forthcoming HS2 lines arrive in the North. Money invested wisely now will help local businesses and not only stimulate significant economic growth, but will mean future generations of young people will have much better employment opportunities.”
