East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight is sponsoring a parliamentary motion calling for consideration to be given to lowering the rate of Value Added Tax (VAT) applied at restaurants, pubs and hotels.

The motion highlights the challenging conditions these businesses are experiencing and points out that some other EU member states apply lower rates of VAT to the tourism and hospitality sector in order to boost trade and help it compete against big supermarkets.

Sir Greg, who last year was honoured by the British Beer & Pub Association for his work supporting local pubs said: “It is essential that the Government considers all options for supporting these small businesses which are vital for jobs, tourism and our social economy and I believe these proposals should be given serious considerations”.
