East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight has welcomed today’s announcement of £8m from the Local Growth Fund for dualling a section of the A1079 near Barmby Moor and Wilberfoss.

Sir Greg said: “The scheme will improve journey times and also safety along this key road for travel to York, the East Riding and Hull. Planning is already underway and construction is due to start as early as 2017.

Sir Greg, who argued for and predicted this funding announcement as part of the Government’s Local Growth Fund strategy in December, said: “Over the past few months I made clear my strong support for these measures and impressed upon Ministers the need to see upgrades and improvements to the A1079, as it is the main arterial road between Hull and York, to prevent economic growth in the area being hampered”.

Sir Greg added: “This government has an excellent track record of delivering infrastructure projects to benefit local people – all funded from a growing economy.

The money that has been secured is conditional on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council also supporting the work. Sir Greg said he had, “every confidence that they were 100% behind the project”.
