East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight has welcomed a new review of food labelling saying consumers “deserve to know more about the food they are buying”.

A European study on the customer demand for labelling food ‘Halal’ or ‘Kosher’ is currently underway and the Government is proposing to review UK labelling on its completion.

Consumer Affairs Minister Jenny Willott said: “We want people to have the information that they need to make informed choices about the food that they buy”.

Sir Greg said: “I welcome the Government reconsidering the options on food labelling. It would be far better if supermarkets were to introduce a voluntary code now to reveal to their customers if the meat they are purchasing was religiously slaughtered and whether it was stunned beforehand. Disappointingly this has not happened. Consumers have a right to know what they are buying so that they can make an informed choice and therefore this Government review is most welcome”.
