East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight is sponsoring a Parliamentary motion condemning the recent slaughter of wild dolphins on Japan’s Pacific coast.

The slaughter of around 40 dolphins took place at Taiji and in addition another 52 dolphins, including a rare albino dolphin calf, were captured for onward sale to aquariums.

Sir Greg is condemning the Japanese government’s continued support for the slaughter by issuing quotas for the killing of over 20,000 dolphins every year.

Sir Greg said, “This practice is barbaric. The slaughtering of dolphin’s by cutting their spinal cord with a metal spike is a heinous practice and could well be driving some dolphin populations to extinction”.

Sir Greg welcomed the statement from the British Ambassador to Japan opposing all forms of dolphin slaughter and calling on the Taiji Whale Museum to release the albino dolphin calf from captivity.
